A Message from Your New President

JIU President David Leasure shares his views on your university and you.


Dear JIU Students,

I am enormously pleased to be serving as your new president, a responsibility I take very seriously.

First, it’s important that you know that the center of our universe at JIU is you. My greatest accountability is to you, my students, to deliver on our commitment as an institution of higher learning. We are committed to give you the best educational value for your investment of time, tuition, and heart, and I am determined that we will continue to fulfill our end of that bargain.

Your end of the bargain, most of all, requires heart. Heart is the courageous dedication you have to yourself, your loved ones, and to the journey on which you have embarked. What you invest of yourself in your education is directly proportional to what you will achieve. Only by fully engaging yourself in this experience— in honestly facing your needs, in setting challenging goals, in participating openly and caringly with your community of fellow learners and faculty, and in tireless perseverance—will you reap all of the rewards of your education.

One of our graduates this year told us that he was continuing his education, in part, because he wanted his children to know that learning never stops. That is the cornerstone on which JIU was built, and on which it functions. Our promise to you is that we will constantly strive to provide you—today and tomorrow—with the tools you need to contribute your best, at work, in your community, and in the world.

I have met many of you, hope to meet many more, and am proud of each of you for taking these steps to change your lives, and those of others.

My door—as it were—is always open.
