EDUCATION

Robert W. Fulton, PhD

Dear Jones International University MEd students,

Dear Jones International University MEd students, I hope this letter finds you all well and happy. I have some exciting news that I hope you find interesting and helpful.

Career Opportunities
Did you know that there are 4.2 million K-12 teachers and administrators in the United States? These numbers make K-12 education the nation’s single largest occupation requiring a bachelor’s degree or higher. More important, five of the top 15 careers with the most openings for the next decade are in education (see America’s Career Infonet online at http://www.acinet.org); the majority of these openings are in the highest salary quartile. This news translates into high-paying career opportunities for JIU’s MEd graduates for the next decade.

Update: JIU’s Application to the Colorado State Board of Education
JIU is seeking recognition from the Colorado State Board of Education (CSBE) as an “approved program of preparation” for public school K-12 teachers and administrators. The JIU leadership team developed the MEd program to meet the academic requirements of nationally recognized teaching and leadership standards, including those of Colorado. Working through this process with the CSBE will help the university strengthen its commitment to K-12 students and the teachers and administrators who serve them in public schools. The JIU application is on the CSBE’s July agenda, and an answer is expected by the middle of August! Once this approval is obtained, graduates of the program will have at least two options when seeking a position with a state public institution:

I will definitely keep you posted about this exciting change!

New Faculty
As the Chair of Education, I have the great fortune of managing an online faculty from a global talent pool. Since the JIU MEd program is currently on track to triple in size this year, I have hired five new, exceptional faculty members who are excited to be part of this fascinating learning environment. Please welcome these remarkable thinkers to the JIU family.

Course Changes
The JIU faculty created the four courses listed below to create a manageable workload for students and to incorporate a professional, project-based learning model. This exciting change will further ensure that students are able to complete projects that are personally and professionally meaningful.
