Dear Jones International University School of Education Students,
Welcome to 2006! I hope the new year is treating you well, and that you’re proceeding purposefully and successfully through your studies.
News on the School of Education front:
New Weblog!
At the new JIU School of Education weblog, you will find quarterly news items that help you to stay informed, as well as a place for professors to house exemplary student projects. These projects—accessible after login—serve as an historical record of JIU student achievement and as models to which all students and professors may refer.
I look forward to receiving feedback from both students and professors about the blog. Will you please let me know if you have questions, concerns or suggestions? Most important, I want to know if your access to these excellent student projects has been helpful to you.
Welcome New Professors!
To become a member of the JIU School of Education faculty, a professor must (a) be prepared in an academic subject area, (b) be familiar with current practices in the field, (c) be informed about current research, and (d) be able to serve as an effective teacher. As such, most JIU SoE professors:
Since the JIU School of Education is currently on track to more than double in size this year, we have hired three new, exceptional faculty members who meet these standards and are excited to be part of this fascinating learning environment. Please welcome these remarkable professors to the JIU family.
Welcome New Licensure Chairperson
Please also welcome Rosemary (Rosie) Conner, who now serves as the academic chair for the K-12 licensure degree specializations. See “JIU Welcomes Two, New Academic Chairs” in a separate section of this edition of the JIU Insider for Rosie’s background and impressive qualifications.
Course Changes
Based on student and faculty input, we have changed the core course requirements for students in the Adult Education and Administration specializations. Beginning with the February ‘06 session, EDU 653 Assessing Learning will be a required core course, replacing EDU 550. If you’ve already taken EDU 550, you have fulfilled this requirement.
| Course | Title | Credit Hours |
|---|---|---|
| EDU 500 | Preparing for a Lifetime of Learning | 3 |
| EDU 522 | Research and the Learning Organization | 3 |
| EDU 531 | Education Ethics and Social Responsibility | 3 |
| EDU 542 | Strategic Planning for Educators | 3 |
| EDU 544 | Business Management for the Learning Organization | 3 |

If, after reading this letter, you have any questions regarding your degree specialization, please work with your academic services counselor (Brad Ingram or Joslyn Radden). Brad or Joslyn will help you prepare a course sequence degree plan that works for you.
Please keep in touch with me on your progress and let me know if there is any way that I can be of service to you as you work to complete your degree in education at Jones International University. We are committed to your success and interested in learning additional ways to support our education students.
Sincerest best wishes,
