EDU 681: Adult Learning Theory

Estimated Hours Per Week: 15

Overview

EDU681 is designed to provide basic proficiency in the design and facilitation of educational programs targeted at the adult learner in a wide range of settings. To achieve this outcome, students need to understand the rudimentary theoretical, psychological and social dimensions of the adult learner in contrast to pre-adult learners. This seminal adult learner knowledge base includes comprehension of adult learning styles and instructional design tailored to the adult-specific audience. Similarly, achieving basic proficiency in adult education design and facilitation requires that students have an understanding of the requisite skills and characteristics of effective teachers of adults.

Special emphasis will be placed upon the analysis, selection and practical application of established adult instructional methods and techniques. In order to effectively develop and facilitate adult learning programs, educators must have a familiarity and working knowledge of the various approaches and tools available to them. The use of case studies, discussion and, distance learning techniques, formation of learning contracts, among others are analyzed with a view towards understanding these approaches and being able to discriminate as to when their application is appropriate given the learner profile.
