ENG 100: Communication and Learning Strategies

Overview

This course will provide you with the tools you need for success in your college career--good study habits, solid writing skills, research competence, and the ability to create a quality visual presentation. You will work on developing and strengthening your writing skills for completing JIU assignments such as Forum discussion postings, short essays, and short and long reports. You will also learn how to use JIU’s e-global library® to conduct research and to synthesize your findings into essays and projects. This course is required for all students transferring in with less than 30 credits; it is strongly recommended for all others.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Identify your preferred learning style, and discover how to use that information to your best advantage in college and in your career.
  • Apply a four-step writing process (planning, writing, revising, proofreading) when constructing written documents.
  • Learn the importance of audience and purpose in your writing tasks.
  • Construct a concise and effective written document that is free of errors in mechanics, clearly focused and directed to your audience, and projects a professional image.
  • Locate and evaluate the credibility of resources on the World Wide Web.
  • Conduct research in JIU’s e-global library®.
  • Correctly format a paper using APA guidelines.
  • Create a short report that is well organized and demonstrates strong writing skills.
  • Construct a well-developed persuasive essay on an assigned topic in which you identify and overcome objections.
  • Design an effective PowerPoint presentation.
