IT 102: Introduction to Computer Information Systems

Overview

Computer knowledge and skills are critical for maximizing efficiency in the modern workplace, regardless of your career. The networked computer is both an integral component of business and an empowering tool for the individual. This course provides a foundation in understanding the technology, architecture. and applications of information technology. It surveys the evolution of the networked computer system, PC and networking hardware and support issues, operating systems, database management systems, as well as fundamentals of wide and local area networks.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Understand terms and concepts used in IT.
  • Understand how a computer is designed.
  • Distinguish between different types of operating systems.
  • Explain why databases are important in user productivity.
  • Give a brief description of object-oriented programming.
  • Explain the need for local and wide area networks.

Course Requirements

4X CD-ROM or faster Sound Card Pentium II MMX enabled or equivalent (Mac Users: PowerPC processor G3 or later) QuickTime 4.0 or later installed on your machine.
